An iconic race, the Coolangatta Gold is one of the toughest, most challenging events in Australian surf sports. This could be largely due to the fact it was created as the dramatic climax to Peter Schrek’s movie about two sons competing for their father’s love.

Schrek did much of his thinking and script writing on Gold Coast beaches; as he formulating the idea of the Coolangatta Gold he was struck by the idea of asking a passer-by if they would run, board, swim, and ski over 40 kilometres from Coolangatta up the coast past Burleigh and back again. The beach goer said ‘heck no’, so Peter asked if they’d do it for $25 000 prize money and they said ‘heck yes’.

Rather than creating film sets, the producers decided to run the Coolangatta Gold as an actual event attracting several well-known Ironmen; however it was unknown-at-the-time 18 year old Guy Leech from Manly who took out first place.

The 2020 race will be held from Saturday 24 to Sunday 25 October in Coolangatta, Gold Coast and is open to the public. The event consists of a 33.6 kilometre short course and 41.8 kilometre long course that tests competitors swimming, running, board paddling, and surf skiing capabilities either individually or as a team.
